How pet age affects your insurance

A co-payment is a common cost with insurance, especially for older pets. It’s usually 10-20% of the vet bill after your excess is deducted. While it can lower your premium, you’ll pay it for every claim.

Pet aged under 9?

You don’t need to make a co-payment. But, you can reduce your premium by choosing to pay 10% or 20% of vet treatment costs. This is for each injury or illness during the policy year, on top of your chosen excess.

Pet aged 9 or over?

You’ll need to pay 20% of the remaining vet treatment costs, on top of your excess.

What we don't cover

The first 48 hours

Pet Insurance FAQs

Is my pet eligible for John Lewis Pet Insurance?

If your cat or dog is at least 8 weeks old, they could be eligible for John Lewis Pet Insurance.
There’s no upper age limit, but there could be other circumstances where they couldn’t be covered.

Once you've taken out a policy, you’re not able to claim for vet fees as a result of an accident in the first 48 hours. You also can't claim for any changes in your pet's health or behaviour in the first 14 days of cover.

Does pet insurance cover vaccinations?

Pet insurance doesn’t usually cover vaccinations as they are considered to be routine. It’s important to keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date for their own safety. If your pet becomes unwell and needs treatment because they have missed a vaccination, you may not be able to make a claim.

Does pet insurance cover neutering?

Pet insurance doesn’t typically cover the cost of neutering because it’s a preventative treatment.

John Lewis Money expert review

Vet bills can be unexpected and arrive at any time, and a good insurance policy is the best way to help with these.

¹When you renew your policy with no break in cover.

²A dental check is required every 12 months. After their first annual check-up, and any advised treatment is carried out, your pet is covered for tooth decay or gum disease that happens before or at the time of their next check-up. If they miss a check-up or if the advised treatment isn’t done, you’re only covered for:

  • Accidental damage to teeth or gums

  • Tooth decay or gum disease if it’s caused by an underlying illness

  • Removal of teeth to treat an unrelated illness

For more details, see our policy documents.
