From a weekend break in buzzy Barcelona to a relaxing holiday in Majorca or even a sherry-tasting trip to Jerez, Spain has something for everyone.

I’m a frequent traveller to the country, taking in San Sebastian, Bilbao, Seville and Madrid on previous trips, and Girona and Calella de Palafrugell on a big family holiday last year (three generations - 15 of us in total!). Ibiza was also a fantastic destination for a beautiful and memorable trip a few years ago with my husband and young son.

But how much do things cost in Spain, and how much cash should you take? Our guide explains all.

What is the currency in Spain?

In terms of spending money in Spain, the official currency is euros, so that’s what you need to pack for your next trip.

Euros are available to buy online and at an in-store John Lewis Bureau de Change. Order before 3 pm for next-day home delivery. Free delivery is available for orders over £500.

How much cash can I take to Spain?

The maximum amount you can take into the country is €10,000

If you carry more than this, you’ll need to complete a declaration form at the port or airport, and hand it in upon arrival.

While most places accept contactless payments with a debit or credit card, it’s always useful to have cash for tips, small purchases and at markets. If you’re planning to go off the beaten track, say hiking in Andalucia or Tenerife, cafes and shops may not accept card payments so it’s better to take some cash.

How much do things cost in Spain?

Spain is generally a more affordable holiday destination than neighbouring France, and other countries like Italy and Sweden. We look at how much accommodation, museums and guided tours cost in three popular locations, so you can work out how much money you need to bring to Spain.

How much does it cost to travel around Spain?

There are plenty of ways to travel around Spain and see the sights. The big cities have efficient public transport systems, but you may also like to hire a car or grab a taxi. To hop around the Balearic Islands, you can fly or get a ferry.

Here are some average costs:

Taxi fare from Madrid airport into city centre: €30

Ferry cost from Barcelona to Mallorca: €100 return

How much should you tip in Spain?

Tips are appreciated in Spain, but they are entirely at the discretion of the customer, and they’re not always compulsory.

Tipping in restaurants

Restaurants with table service often include a service charge - look for 'servicio incluido' on the bill. Even if 'servico non incluido' is printed on the bill, there is still no obligation to leave a tip; it is completely your choice.

If you do want to leave a tip, you can add 5% or 10% to the bill.

Tip The total cost of a meal Tip amount Total
5% €35 €1.75 €36.75
10% €35 €3.50 €38.50

Tips for taxi drivers

Most taxi drivers appreciate but don’t expect tips. You can round the fare up to the nearest euro, or you can add a tip if the driver has delivered exceptional service, for example carrying heavy bags for you.

Tips for hotel staff

It’s customary to tip at hotels to show your appreciation to staff. It’s up to you how much you’d like to give, but here’s a general guide:

Staff Amount Per When
Porter €1 - €2 Per bag (up to a maximum of €5 for multiple suitcases) After bringing it to your room and after they bring it to your car/taxi after checking out
Valet Parking Attendant €5 Per car After they bring you your car
Housekeeping €1 Per night When you leave your room to check out (put it on a desk with a thank-you note)
