What is motor legal protection?
Motor legal protection helps to cover any legal expenses associated with a car insurance claim.
John Lewis Car Insurance customers can add this optional extra to their policy.
What extra cover does it give me?
Motor legal protection isn’t a legal requirement. It also isn't usually included in standard car insurance policies.
Our Legal Protection Cover is an optional add-on that gives you:
Up to £100,000 towards legal expenses where we believe you have more than a 50% chance of a positive outcome
Up to £25,000 towards defending a driving conviction
Help to pursue compensation following a road traffic accident that wasn’t your fault - where financial losses aren't covered by your standard car insurance
Cover for the cost of defending against some motoring offences
Access to our 24/7 legal helpline on 03300 240 608
We can't provide cover if you were driving without a licence, disqualified or under the influence of drink or drugs.

What is the difference between motor legal cover and legal liability cover?
Unlike Motor Legal Protection, legal liability covers:
Your legal liability for the death or injury of another person
Damage to property caused by you driving your car
Other insured drivers using your car with your permission
John Lewis Car Insurance includes legal liability cover as standard.

If you have the Motor Legal Protection add-on, we can help:

Arrange physiotherapy, if required
With completing the forms in the online portal

In 2020, one in ten customers with our Motor Legal Protection used it to open a claim. On average, a customer with Motor Legal Protection recovers £500 more compensation than a customer without it.
