What are white goods?
White goods, or home appliances, are medium to large appliances in the home that we use for everyday tasks. Think most machines in your kitchen or utility room, including:
Ovens and cookers
Dishwashers
Washing machines
Fridges
What’s the difference between home insurance and home appliance insurance?
Does my home insurance cover white goods and appliances?
Our Home Insurance covers your free-standing white goods and appliances against perils such as:
Fire
Theft
Storm or flood damage
This includes ovens, washing machines and dishwashers.
Bronze, Silver and Gold customers can add Accidental Damage to their policy. Specialist Home Insurance customers are covered against accidental damage as standard.
Our Home Insurance doesn’t cover your white goods for:
Deliberate damage
Damage caused by pets
Escape of water damage to the appliance from which the water escapes (unless the damage is caused by freezing)
Does Home Insurance cover appliance breakdowns?
Unfortunately, our Home Insurance does not cover appliances if they break down. However if you purchased your item from John Lewis, your appliance comes with a minimum 2 year guarantee. This covers breakdown and mechanical failure.
Our Buildings Insurance covers loss or damage caused by water escaping - due to a burst pipe, for example. But the appliance from which the water escapes will not be covered.
You may also like to consider John Lewis Home Emergency Cover. This usually covers boilers and heating systems - which aren’t white goods. It can also cover the cost of a temporary repair in an emergency.
Accidental damage and white goods
Whether it’s swinging a fridge door open onto a hard surface or dropping a heavy object on your cooker, accidents happen.
Bronze, Silver and Gold customers can add accidental damage cover to their contents insurance. This covers white goods against accidental damage - for example, if you leave coins in a pocket when you wash your jeans. It doesn’t cover mechanical, electrical or electronic fault or breakdown.
Specialist Home Insurance customers are covered against accidental damage as standard.
John Lewis appliances come with a minimum 2 year guarantee covering breakdown and mechanical failure.
Is insurance for your home appliances worth it?
Appliance insurance can be worth considering, even if your white goods are fairly new and working well.
Specific home appliance insurance can give you peace of mind that your dishwasher, fridge freezer and cooker are protected against theft, damage and even breakdown. This way you know you will be financially covered should you have a big repair bill or need to buy a new appliance.
